Award recognizes industry’s “most innovative and effective in-store media”

MARCH 9, 2012 - La Mirada, Calif. – Makita Industrial Power Tools has won the Silver Award for "Outstanding Marketing At Retail Achievement" by the The Point-of-Purchase Advertising International (POPAI), an international trade association for the marketing at retail industry.

Makita's award-winning PRO Center display system is a dynamic presence at the point of sale.

 

POPAI received over 500 entries this year. The Makita PRO Center was recognized for outstanding design, innovation, interactivity, and the proven ability to lift sales. 
 
"Recognizing the most innovative and effective in-store media in each industry category is an important way to establish the ever changing standard of excellence in marketing at retail," said Richard Winter, POPAI president.
 
For Makita and partner Creative Partners Inc., the PRO Center display was the result of extensive design and research, with a goal to create something new and fresh for the industry.
 
"Makita is an innovation leader in the power tool category, so we challenged ourselves to create something truly innovative at the point of sale for our dealer partners," said Brent Withey, Brand Director, Makita USA. "Our PRO Center display system is more than welded steel tubing and sheet metal with graphics. It’s a three-hundred sixty-degree program that connects Makita, our dealers, and professional tool users."
 
"Makita came to us with creative requirements that were quite challenging," said Mila Thompson, President of Creative Partners. "They have a broad range of tools with highly innovative features. We needed to make sure each tool was prominently displayed and all benefits were clearly apparent.   Fortunately, Makita really understands their targeted consumer so determining the look and feel of the unit was fairly straightforward. We were able to create modules that feature tools specific to various trades. All units placed together create a shop-in-shop environment that allows shoppers to easily see all that Makita has to offer."
 
Interactive, Attention-Getting, and Built-to-Last
Makita dealers displaying a PRO Center system offer a full range of Makita Industrial Power Tools, including the ground-breaking 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Line-up as well as tools and accessories for concrete applications, metalworking, woodworking, and more. 
 
"For the professional tool user, a PRO Center dealer is the ultimate destination to purchase power tools and accessories," said Withey. "This customer needs plenty of options, and always wants to pick up the tools, learn the features and benefits, and perhaps even try it out on the spot. PRO Center creates the buying experience that this customer demands."
 
PRO Center delivers a range of benefits to dealers. The sturdy all-metal powder-coated finish is designed to last, with an all-metal gridwall and wire rack system for total versatility. There are four specially-designed units that are unique to each product category (concrete, cordless #1, cordless #2, and trades) and each are built around the tools associated with the category, from two-pound driver-drills to 70-pound breaker hammers.
 
Additional interactive features include flat screen monitors for educational videos backed by a Kicker® Sound System. A built-in security system features retractable cables for the tools and lockable cabinet drawers.
 
"One challenge was where to put the 70-pound breaker hammer," said Thompson. "A single wire rack was not an option. So our solution was to build a floor-level bay to accommodate the tool and the cart that goes with it, and position it next to a three-drawer cabinet that holds related bits and accessories."
