Scheuring Speed Sports Makita Tools newcomer Darrin Mees made quite an impression on the team and the competition at the season-opening round of the AMSOIL Championship Snocross Series in Duluth, MN. The Semi-Pro rider from Setanket, New York earned several qualifying race wins over the weekend and the top qualifier spot in day one racing. Mees led much of Saturday’s main event before finishing second to the defending class champion and earning a spot on the podium.
The road was not quite as smooth on Sunday with two third-place finishes, forcing a trip to the last chance qualifier. But showing the same determination that now has him labeled as a title contender, Darrin put his head down and raced his way into the main where he rounded out the weekend with his second podium finish in third place.
On Friday, the series held a special non-points event to fill the roster for the 2011 ESPN Winter X Games. Darrin and brother Garret both surprised everyone with their impressive qualifying runs that locked them into the feature race. Unfortunately, a first turn collision collected several of the riders, caused significant enough damage that neither of the two were able to restart.
Professional class rider and Scheuring Speed Sports Makita Tools teammate Robbie Malinoski was at times the fastest man on the track during the weekend but could not find a way to the podium. Malinoski won heat races in both Pro Stock and Pro Open en route to the finals, but struggled with suspension issues on a Duluth, Minnesota track that featured more snow and bigger jumps and impacts than seen in recent years.
Up next is the inaugural Dakota Magic Casino/Fargo National at the newly opened Newman's Outdoor Field in Fargo, North Dakota. This is a Friday-Saturday event that promises to be a huge draw in a real hotbed for the sport.
The Amsoil Duluth National will air on Versus Channel on Sunday, December 19 at 3 p.m. Eastern.
